Description

A fine pair of patternated 19th century French "Marley Horses". have a rearing horse being restrained by a male figure, on naturalistic bases.

Made of very good quality spelter.

The "Marley Horses" are after Guillaume Coustouv's Horse Tamer (1677-1746), from the "Chevaux de Marly" series. "Marly Horses" (often incorrectly called "Marley" horses) are so called after the pair of Carrara marble horses sculpted by Guillaume Coustou in 1739, as a commission for Louis XV for the Chatcau at Marly- le-Roi near Paris. They were entitled Horse is

restrained by Groom.

They are now in the Marly Sculpture Courtyard at the Louvre.

Footnote: Guillaume

Costou the Elder was a French Sculptor and academician. He won the Colbert prize giving him a four-year scholarship at the French Academy in Rome. He soon left it, however and according to legend, wandered homeless around the streets of Rome for some time. On his return to Paris he helped his uncle execute the monumental equestrian sculptures of Fame and Mercury for Marley, which were to be replaced by his own Horse Tamers, which reinvent the theme of the colossal Roman marbles of the 'Horse Tamers' in the Piazza Quirinalc, in Rome. Marley was where Louis XVI of France could escape the formal rigours of what he was constructing in Versailles.

The theme of Marlcy was that it was a simple hunting lodge, just enough to accommodate the Royal Hunt.

The original Marley Horses were commissioned by King Louis XV in 1739 from sculptor Guillaume Coustou the Elder for the watering place at the Chateau de Marly. These monumental marble groups depict restrained wild horses and became some of the most celebrated works of French sculpture, leading to numerous reduced-scale bronze copies being produced in the 19th century.

Nineteenth-century French decorative bronzes were typically produced using the lost-wax method or sand casting. They were cast in bronze or brass alloys and often finished with various chemical patinas ranging from deep brown to black, sometimes with gilt highlights or polished raised surfaces.

Authentication involves examining the casting quality, chisel work on the surface details, the depth and oxidation of the patina, and foundry marks or signatures. Older pieces exhibit natural wear, consistent patination within recessed areas, and heavy construction characteristic of period manufacturing techniques.

Antique bronze sculptures integrate well into traditional and transitional spaces by adding classical weight and texture. They are typically displayed on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or heavy timber desks where their dark metallic finish contrasts with lighter backgrounds.

Bronze sculptures should be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Dusting should be done gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding commercial metal polishes or chemical cleaners that can strip the historic patina.
