Description

This is a delightful, original painting after Francois Boucher in its original high quality gilt bronze ormolu frame dating from around 1890. The painting is beautifully executed in bold gouache colours depicting a lady at bath time with her maids. The work is signed by the artist R. Dumans (after Boucher) and is in excellent condition. It is in a beautiful bronze ormolu easel frame which is a heavy and very good quality piece that compliments the work finely.

Francois Boucher (1703-1770) was a French painter, etcher and draughtsman who famously worked in the Rococo style. He is well renowned for his idyllic and voluptuous paintings on classical themes, decorative allegories and pastoral scenes. He was perhaps the most celebrated painter and decorative artist of the 18th century.

This beautiful painting is one of several good miniatures we currently have listed from the same collection.

FAQs

Miniature painting evolved from illuminated manuscripts during the Renaissance, later becoming popular for portraiture and small-scale classical scene reproductions among the aristocracy during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional miniatures were executed on materials such as vellum, ivory, card, or copper, using watercolour, gouache, or fine oil paints, and typically housed in brass, bronze, or wooden frames.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-painted brushwork under magnification, period-appropriate framing techniques, and material aging consistent with historical production methods, rather than modern printing dots.

These small-scale artworks work effectively when grouped in a gallery wall arrangement or placed on narrow wall spaces, mantels, or shelves where viewers can appreciate their intricate detail.

To prevent fading and material degradation, miniature paintings must be kept out of direct sunlight, maintained in stable humidity conditions, and protected from moisture behind sealed glass.
