A photogravure is an intaglio printmaking process that produces photographic images on a printing plate, combining the tonal richness of a photograph with the archival longevity of an etching.

These prints were typically produced using high-grade, acid-free woven or laid paper, often with specialized printing inks applied to copper plates during the early 20th century.

Authentication relies on examining the paper stock for age-related toning, inspecting the plate mark indentation around the image, and verifying publisher credits and artist signatures.

They are best displayed using traditional timber framing with neutral matting to highlight the monochrome tones, making them suitable for studies, libraries, or hallway galleries.

Preservation requires framing with UV-protective glass, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and avoiding direct exposure to strong sunlight to prevent fading and paper degradation.
