This nineteenth-century Edwardian pocket watch is a silver-cased open-face timepiece supplied by John Elkan Limited of 35 Liverpool Street, London, and manufactured in Switzerland. The piece exhibits a white enamelled dial with black Roman numerals, slender blued steel hands, a small subsidiary seconds dial at the base, and Swiss made lettering near the bottom edge. A textured gold-coloured crown sits at the top alongside a rounded silver suspension loop, while a functional plunger projects from the right-hand side of the silver case to operate the repeating mechanism. The visible surface shows light ageing and minor wear to the white dial and silver casing. Diameter 6 cm, 1.5 cm deep. This portable timepiece functions as an interesting decorative item for display on a desk or shelf in a study or library.

An open-face pocket watch features a case without a protective metal cover over the glass dial, allowing the time to be read directly. Designed for convenience, these timepieces typically feature the winding stem and loop positioned at the 12 oclock location.

Antique pocket watches were commonly crafted with sterling silver, nickel, or gold cases surrounding enamel dials, brass gear trains, blued steel hands, and jewelled bearings to reduce mechanical friction.

Authenticity is verified through hallmark stamps stamped on the inside or outside of the metal case, indicating silver purity, assay office marks, and date letters, alongside serial numbers on the mechanical movement.

Antique pocket watches can be styled in modern interiors by placing them on specialized brass watch stands under glass cloches, displayed within shadow box frames, or worn as functional personal accessories with double Albert chains.

To maintain a mechanical pocket watch, store it in a dry environment to prevent tarnishing, avoid over-winding the mainspring, and have the internal movement serviced by a professional horologist every few years to re-grease components.
