FAQs

A French marriage bed is a historical bedstead style, often characterised by elaborate carvings on the headboard and footboard, traditionally commissioned or gifted to celebrate a marriage.

These beds were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or chestnut, featuring traditional joinery and hand-carved decorative motifs.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved detailing with natural tool marks, traditional hardware, and natural ageing or patina on the wood surface.

Pairing the heavy wooden frame with minimalist, neutral linens and contemporary lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern simplicity.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding excessive humidity changes, and periodically applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
