Why do some have no handles?

Eighteenth-century potters copied the Chinese tradition of drinking tea from small bowls. Handleless shapes stacked easily and required less space in a shipping crate or a domestic tea caddy. Fitted handles were often reserved for coffee cups, as the hotter liquid made the sides too warm to grip comfortably.

What does the crescent mark mean?

A crescent is the most common factory mark used during the Dr Wall period. Painters brushed it onto the base in blue before glazing. It helps place the piece before 1783, though other factories did try to copy it. You have to check the paste and glaze to be sure.

I inherited a teacup that looks just like the old blue and white ones, but the bottom is completely smooth without any unglazed ring, is that normal for this factory?

Early antique Worcester cups almost always have a distinct foot rim. This unglazed ridge was necessary to stop the piece fusing to the kiln shelf during firing. A completely smooth base usually suggests a nineteenth-century reproduction or a different manufacturer. The early soapstone recipe required a physical foot ring to maintain stability in the heat.

When looking at the hand painted floral patterns, how can you tell if the decoration was done at the factory or added years later by someone else?

Factory decoration usually sits naturally within the white space. Later outside decoration often looks crowded because painters were trying to cover up sparse early patterns or minor flaws. Look closely at how the colours interact. If bright polychrome enamels seem clumsily applied over a simple blue and white transfer print, it was likely altered later to follow changing fashions.
