Do the drawers always come out easily?

Most slip out without much fuss once you pull them past the halfway mark. You just tilt the front downwards slightly to clear the internal stops. Swelling in damp rooms sometimes makes them stick. They're usually fine once you let the piece acclimatise to a dry house.

I have inherited a large mahogany bedroom chest but the bottom drawer seems to include the base moulding attached to it, is that normal?

That configuration turns up frequently on heavier pieces from the mid-nineteenth century. Makers integrated the plinth moulding directly into the face of the bottom drawer to maximise storage depth. You pull the handle and the entire base section slides forward over the floorboards. It gave buyers space for bulky blankets while maintaining a neat exterior profile. It isn't a modern modification.

Can I clean original brass handles?

A light dusting works best. Harsh metal polishes strip away the aged patina that collectors prefer. You'll wash away the history.

My piece has a really deep top drawer that looks like it could hold two normal drawers inside, what would they have used this for?
