How do I care for the surface?

Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight. The heat will dry out the underlying hide glue and cause those thin veneers to lift or crack. Dust it with a dry cloth. You can apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to feed the surface and build a soft shine.

I have a narrow staircase with a tight corner at the top and I'm worried about getting a large heavy piece of furniture up into the bedroom. Do these split into sections?

Some of them do. Look for a chest on chest, also called a tallboy, which is built in two distinct halves for exactly this reason. The upper section simply lifts off the base. You'll also find early chests where the original separate stand can detach from the main carcase to make moving easier.

Why do the drawers stick?

Wood expands with seasonal humidity changes. The runners and side guides swell and bind inside the carcase. Rubbing a dry candle along the bottom edges will often solve the problem.

My grandmother always lined her old wooden drawers with floral paper because she said the raw timber underneath snagged delicate clothing and smelled a bit stale. Is it safe to paint the insides?

Painting the internal oak or pine isn't recommended. It traps moisture in the wood and alters the historic surface. Lining paper remains the best solution for rough bottoms. You can also buy scented drawer liners or use small bags of dried lavender to mask any musty smells. If the lining boards are splitting, a cabinet-maker can slide a protective false bottom over the original wood without causing permanent changes.
