Bakhtiari Rug, Persia, Circa 1890, 2.18m X 1.40m

19th century
Description

The Bakhtiari tribes which migrated in Southern and Central Persia around the Zagros Mountains are noted for producing a rich and varied range of rugs, carpets, bags and other woven artifacts. Of ancient origin, their lands became of strategic and material interest at the end of the 19th century, and many of the tribes and their leaders became very wealthy. Today, the Bakhtiari live in towns and villages around the City of Isfahan. This lovely rug is in many ways typical of Bakhtiari village weaving. The wool is handspun and of fine glossy quality. The dyes are all evidently derived from natural sources, a practice that continued among Bakhtiari weavers well into the 20th century. And the design of repeating panels representing cypress and fern trees, and floral ornaments has been used many times over by the Bakhtiari weavers. Usually the panels are in square in format, known as the 'heshti' design. Here however, we have the more unusual format of ogival medallions. The entire composition is colourful and charming. generally very good condition for its age. Professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
