Size: 5ft 4in x 3ft 10in (163 x 116cm).

Antique Turkish Bandirma rug of prayer niche design with a green ground.

Circa 1900.

This is a finely woven rug, wool on a fine cotton foundation with white cotton highlights to the pile. The design is based on a column prayer rug, as found in 17th and 18th century Ottoman rugs.

The following is quoted from Britannica, 'Panderma (now Bandirma), a town in Turkey on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmora, usually as imitations of Ghiordes prayer-rug designs. The enterprise was begun early in the 20th century, perhaps with weavers from Ghiordes, though it is usually described as an Armenian establishment'.

The rug has a soft green field which changes the depth of colour as you move around it.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile. The rug is of fine weave.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display, the rug is suitable for light domestic use.
