This early 18th century Queen Anne walnut chest on stand has a warm brown colour with feather banded, crossbanded drawer fronts and eight oak-lined drawers secured by brass D-drop swing handles and escutcheons. The upper section has ogee mouldings, canted corners and a projecting cornice above a combination of small and long graduated drawers, whilst the lower stand rests on cabriole legs with pad feet beneath a scalloped apron. Measuring 163 cm high, 105 cm wide, 58 cm deep, this substantial statement piece provides versatile storage for folded linens, garments, or accessories. It functions practically in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway as a focal point, integrating seamlessly into traditional or transitional interiors requiring period character and timeless utility.

A chest on stand, also known as a highboy or tallboy, is a two-part furniture design originating in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It features an upper chest of drawers resting on a lower table-like base with legs.

These pieces were primarily crafted using native walnut or walnut veneers over oak frames. Later examples incorporated crossbanded herringbone borders and solid brass drop handles with pierced backplates.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn oak drawer linings, naturally aged brass fittings, and characteristic cabriole or turned legs typical of the Queen Anne and George I periods.

A walnut chest on stand works as a focal piece in a bedroom, hallway, or living room when offset by neutral wall colours, contemporary artwork, and minimal decorative accessories.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying and veneer lifting. Treat the surface periodically with clear beeswax polish and dust with a soft, lint-free cloth.
