Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this piece to the 1920s.
One can reasonably assume that it was produced for a client with great taste. The fine workmanship, materials and colours all point to weavers who understood the art form to perfection. The golden yellow field is centred by a flowering urn which is surrounded by other floral sprigs, laying horizontally, a style very characteristic of the kilims from Oltenia. The use of curved wefts enables the weaver to draw these elements in a naturalistic way, and creates a sense of three-dimensionality. All very charming. The pale blue abrashed border contains similar floral elements and frames the field perfectly. This is a wonderfully decorative carpet which would work equally well on a wall or as a floor covering in the right space, and in many types of settings. Professionally cleaned and in very good condition. There are only a few minor signs of use which suggests this piece was cherished through the generations.
