FAQs

The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late 19th century, promoting art for arts sake and drawing heavy inspiration from Japanese design, featuring clean lines and ebonised finishes.

These pieces typically utilise hardwood such as beech, ash, or mahogany, treated with a dark black ebonising finish, often complemented by hand-painted gilt highlights.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery methods, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, hand-applied finishes showing natural ageing, and subtle maker marks or registration stamps.

An ebonised table provides a striking contrast against neutral modern walls, serving as a sophisticated platform for lamps, ceramics, or sculptural objects.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight, moisture, and chemical polishes that can degrade the historic surface.
