Cotswold Oriental Rugs has dated this piece to the 1860s.
Antique Caucasian Akstafa long rug with four star medallions and birds.
Circa 1850-70.
This truly outstanding rug is a very early example from a well known group of long rugs. This rug is of classic design with four 'star' medallions on a midnight blue ground. Each medallion is of a different colour and design and flanked by the traditional Akstafa birds. The field is filled with 100's of tribal devices, every inch of the rug contains tribal design. The border is a beautifully drawn example of the classic ivory ground Akstafa design.

This is a true collectors rug and close to 'best of type' and better than most published examples.
The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, there are a few very small old re-weaves that are very difficult to detect. The rug is a little wider than is normally found with Akstafa long rugs.
Hand washed and ready for use or display.
