Originating in the early 19th century, the chiffonier evolved from French designs as a smaller, lower alternative to the traditional sideboard, typically featuring enclosed shelving below and a raised gallery or shelf above.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods like mahogany, often featuring decorative flame or figural veneer panels, hand-cut dovetail joints, and turned wooden supports.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting construction methods, such as the presence of hand-planed timber, old screw types, hand-cut dovetails, and the natural oxidisation and patina of the wood grain.

Integrate the piece into contemporary spaces by pairing it with minimalist lighting, neutral walls, and curated decorative objects to balance its traditional dark wood aesthetic.

Maintain the finish by avoiding direct sunlight, keeping the furniture away from heat sources, and periodically applying quality beeswax while dusting with a soft, dry cloth.
