Description

The term 'Gabbeh' refers to a type of nomadic rug with a thick soft pile which was generally used domestically for bedding or as a furniture cover. This graphic example from South-West Persia was produced in the early 20th century by which time many of the tribal weavers had settled in towns and villages. However, it rug retains several features of the nomadic tradition. It has an all-wool foundation with soft handspun wool. The field is woven with undyed lambswool. The design is dominated by a single tree which is centred by a stepped polygon with latchhooks, an ornament associated with the ancient Luri tribe. There are no superfluous additional ornaments, another indication of a pure tribal tradition. This is a very striking rug which has survived in generally good condition with only minor traces of wear. Professionally cleaned.
