Very Unusual Heriz Carpet, Circa 1890, 3.48m X2.52m (11'4" X 8'3")

Description

This ornately decorated North-West Persian carpet was probably woven in the Heriz area, although the design and colour combination suggests a different nearby origin, perhaps even Bakshaish. Whatever the exact provenance, it is a very striking carpet, essentially a Persian village carpet which has attempted to recreate a more complex urban design. The small stellar central medallion is surrounded by two planes of design, one is a complex lattice, the second is a stylised floral design with trees and palmettes. This is framed by a very pretty abrashed saffron stylised floral border with palmettes and meandering vines. The overall impression is very handsome which would enhance many decorative settings. It has been professionally cleaned, only very minor signs of use.
