Description

The Shahsavan were an important nomadic tribe that migrated in the southern Caucasus and North-West Persia for centuries, eventually settling in villages in North-West Persia. They are known for their outstanding weavings with bold colouring and striking designs with archaic symbolism. This lovely piece is a either a panel from a larger storage bag, perhaps a cradle, or the front of a mafrash, a type of small storage bag. It is an outstanding piece, with a fine weave, lovely colour balance and minimalist drawing. Some would ascribe an early date to the weaving, perhaps around 1850. Note also the use of soumac technique in the end borders. It has survived in excellent condition, and would make a very striking wall piece.
