Description

Karagashli Shirvans are a distinctive group of 19th century Caucasian rugs with their intricate geometric designs distinguished by the familiar fan-like palmettes at the ends of linked diamond medallions. However, they normally appear in the so-called gallery or long rug format and rarely in the small rug format of this superb piece. One can only surmise that it was woven for a special occasion, possibly a wedding, the two human figures and saddled horses certainly suggestive of such an event. The entire design and beautiful colours are a feast for the eyes, from the boldly drawn medallions and myriad small geometric motifs to the yellow main border with repeating stylised serrated calyx leaves. The excellent condition also suggests this piece was highly prized and sparingly used. A tour-de-force.
