Description

A handsome carpet from the Turkoman tribe of Beshir. The depth of colour is really subtle and the technique of using different shades of blue, dark brown and black for the background creates a shimmering effect. The rich, jewel tones twinkle like stars in the firmament, with medallions in the centre and four corners like planets revolving around each other. A really good example of a rare type, in reasonably good condition. One small patch, new sides and showing light wear.

Date of Manufacture

James Cohen Antique Carpets has dated this Antique Beshir Carpet to the 1870s.

Beshir carpets originate from the Amu Darya region in Central Asia, traditionally woven by Turkmen tribes. They are characterised by distinct geometric motifs, often featuring large guls, boteh patterns, and rich madder red and blue palettes.

These carpets are hand-knotted using wool for both the pile and the foundation, incorporating wool or sometimes cotton warps and wefts. Natural dyes, particularly derived from madder root and indigo, create the characteristic deep, enduring colours.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregularities in weave and design typical of tribal production, along with hand-spun wool and natural dye oxidation. Examining the knot density, back construction, and fringe wear helps determine age and origin.

Such a substantial textile anchors a room by adding warmth, texture, and historical contrast to contemporary furnishings. It pairs effectively with neutral upholstery, minimalist architecture, and polished wooden floors.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialised washing, and rotation to ensure even wear. Avoiding direct sunlight prevents fading of the natural dyes.
