Fred Lawson (1888-1968):

A landscape painter. Fred was born at Yeadon, near Leeds. He studied at Dewsbury and Leeds Schools of Art. On a visit to Wensleydale in 1910 with George Graham, they decided to settle there and shared a studio for several years. Fred married the young Muriel Metcalfe of Leyburn in 1933, who was also a painter.

Exhibited at the R.A., R.I. and at numerous exhibitions of Yorkshire artists. Contributed illustrations to The Dalesman from the first issue and for ten years wrote a monthly feature for the magazine. Illustrated several books, including a number by Dorothy Una Ratcliffe.

Travelled in France and Holland, but most of his work depicts the scenery and life of Wensleydale. One of the most fluent and spontaneous water-colourists of his time, he was particularly adept at capturing autumnal tints. A close friend of many Yorkshire artists including Jacob Kramer, Henrietta Lister and George Jackson. His daughter Sonia Lawson is also a painter of high repute.

A retrospective exhibition was held in Middlesbrough Art Gallery in 1969. He was the founder and leading member of the Castle Bolton group of artists. Died in Castle Bolton, Redmire, where he had lived for nearly sixty years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British landscape watercolours of this period often feature expressive brushwork, muted tonal palettes, and rural subjects capturing traditional countryside life.

Artists utilised water-based pigments painted onto heavy rag or cotton paper, often stretched over a wooden board during preparation.

Authenticity is determined through signature verification, paper ageing characteristics, provenance research, and visual evidence of hand-painted pigment layering.

These artworks pair well with neutral walls, natural wood framing, and layered gallery displays alongside muted textiles and period ceramics.

Keep paper artwork framed behind UV-protective glass, mounted on acid-free backing, and displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
