Description

Victorian mahogany Queen dressing table

This incredible Victorian mahogany Queen dressing table was made circa 1870.

In my 45 years of dealing, I cannot recall seeing another of this design.

It would have been made for a Victorian mansion and a wealthy family who could afford the quality of this.

The swing full length mirror at the centre with the beautifully carved and pierced supports.

To each side of the mirror are a pair of serpentine ends with a trinket drawer on the top and a serpentine drawer to each side of the kneehole.

It has a pair of carved and waisted columns at the front and a padded footrest joining the two stands.

Imagine using this superb Victorian mahogany Queen dressing table to dress at and use before going out on a special occasion.

Victorian dressing tables reflect the eclectic, ornate tastes of the 19th century, frequently featuring rich dark woods, carved scrollwork, and integrated mirrors.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timber and veneers like mahogany, utilising traditional joinery such as dovetails for drawers and hand-carved decorative elements.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery, hand-cut dovetails, secondary woods used in drawer linings, natural oxidation of the timber, and original glass or silvering on the mirror.

Such pieces can serve as focal points in modern bedrooms by pairing them with minimalist seating or contrasting them against neutral, textured walls to highlight the deep wood tones.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
