Albert De Belleroche - Oil on Board - Mother and Child

1920 - 1940
Description

Albert de Belleroche - Oil on Board - Mother and Child in a Wooded Path

Albert de Belleroche (1864–1944) was an English painter of portraits and genre scenes and a lithographer. He studied art in Paris with Carolus-Duran and met Sargent at an annual dinner given for the master by his students. According to Belleroche, sittings for the present work took place at Sargent’s studio at 41 boulevard Berthier. The painting was originally conceived as a heroic three-quarter-length portrait, and Belleroche wears a tunic with a square-cut neckline consistent with the style of early sixteenth-century costume. That this work remained in Sargent’s possession throughout his life (even hanging in his dining room for a time) is an affirmation of their enduring friendship.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Post-Impressionism emerged in the late nineteenth century, building upon Impressionist light studies while emphasizing structured composition, expressive colour, and painterly brushwork.

Artists frequently used rigid wood panels or thick board primed with gesso as a support for oil paint applications, providing a stable surface resistant to tearing.

Genuine period paintings typically exhibit visible brush technique, natural paint craquelure, period-appropriate frame construction, and age-related oxidisation on the rear panel.

Position the painting as a focal point above a console table or sideboard, using directional picture lighting to highlight the textured surface against neutral wall tones.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources, dusting the surface gently with a soft dry brush rather than chemical cleaning products.
