Antique Angora Carpet

19th century
Description

An alluring and magnificent antique Angora carpet from Western Anatolia, woven in Ushak, this type of Turkish carpet are known as Angora carpets. The late 19th century weavers came from villages outside of Ushak and employed tribal techniques. Paramount to these techniques was the use of larger knots on these carpets (sometimes less than 30 knots per square inch) and an all-wool foundation.  This is why Angora carpets and Ushaks have a soft loose feel and their designs are more often very open without classical medallions.

Divine warm reds, golden yellows (famous of Ushak) and pale green/blues combine to create the most enticing palette.  With an all over design and in impeccable condition, this is one of the most charming large scale Angora Ushak carpets we have currently in our inventory

Please feel free to request a home visit, we travel nationwide.  A free, no obligation, professional service we have offered for over 30 years to private customers and interior designers.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Angora carpets, originating primarily from Anatolian weaving hubs, are distinguished by their lustrous pile made from fine Angora goat wool, featuring regional floral and geometric motifs.

These carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade Angora wool or mohair for the pile, spun onto a cotton or wool warp and weft foundation.

Authentic examples feature natural dye variations known as abrash, hand-bound selvedges, flexible backing without latex or glue, and a soft, silk-like sheen.

A traditional patterned carpet grounds a contemporary room, providing contrast against minimalist modern seating or blending with dark timber furniture.

Regular vacuuming using a suction-only attachment prevents fibre wear, while professional low-moisture cleaning preserves the natural dyes and delicate wool structure.
