Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843-1917) founded the eponymous store on Regent Street in 1875, Liberty's quickly became synonymous with the trade of fine European and Oriental carpets, in addition to other textiles and decorative art. By descent from the present owner's great-great-uncle Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty.
He probably thought carpets produced in this way would become the height of fashion and exclusivity.
