Chinoiserie Carpet From The Estate Of The Late Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty, Circa 1900

A tremendous chinoiserie carpet with a powerful lemon field centred by a floral roundel, framed by spandrels and plain cream borders flanked on two sides by indigo outer borders with auspicious cloud design, hand-knotted on a machine foundation. 403cm by 352cm.
 
Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843-1917) founded the eponymous store on Regent Street in 1875, Liberty''s quickly became synonymous with the trade of fine European and Oriental carpets, in addition to other textiles and decorative art. By descent from the present owner''s great-great-uncle Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty.
 
At the time Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty purchased or commissioned the carpet this would have been at the cutting edge of modern weaving technology. He probably thought carpets produced in this way would become the height of fashion and exclusivity.
