Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale mahogany tallboy, also known as a chest-on-chest, is a two-section storage piece popularised in 18th-century Britain, featuring an upper chest mounted on a slightly larger lower chest.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany framework, flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak linings, and cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, original brass hardware with naturally oxidised patination, hand-dovetailed drawers, and period-accurate mouldings or ogee bracket feet.

Incorporating a dark wood tallboy into a bedroom or hallway adds vertical scale and introduces texture when balanced against neutral wall tones and minimalist soft furnishings.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, ensuring the cabinet remains positioned away from direct sunlight and radiator heat.
