Antique Genje Rug

19th century
Description

A very rare small and narrow size antique Genje (Gendje) rug, coming from the town of the same name in the Caucasus Mountains. The main design in the centre are patterns of stripes found in rugs of the Shirvan and Daghestan districts. As they are several centuries old, they may be derived from Armenian patterns, to which they show kinship. Both patterns are at times reversed as the result of copying. Genje weavings are famous for their stripe design, which we can see in the centre, often used in brilliant colours in the minor borders too.  The dyes are extremely gentle and muted due to the age of this piece.

Woven with stunning colours from around 1890, the condition of the rug is fairly good.  Woven with a soft wool, it has had some old restoration but in general they have been done well. Please view all the additional images of this beautiful rug.

The name Gendje also refers to the mountainous area surrounding the town.  West of the Caspian Sea with the Black and Caspian Seas to the East and West, Gendje is situated on the main road connecting Tbilisi (Bilisi), the capital of Georgia and Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Gendje is situated between other famous Caucasian weaving areas of Shirvan and Kazak which made it a centre for trading and marketing these tribal rugs.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
