Persian Village Rug with Saffron Yellow Field, 1.88m X 1.30m (6'2" X 4'3")

19th century
Description

This wonderful village rug was woven by the talented Bakhtiar weavers, an ancient Persian tribe who migrated in the Zagros mountains for centuries. In the late 19th century, they began to settle in villages in the Chahar Mahal district and continued to produce outstanding weavings. Yellow is a colour that was used sparingly by the Persian village weavers in the 19th century, primarily because of the expense and difficulty of producing it. This rug bucks the rule with a yellow background which one rarely encounters. Note also the subtle abrash or change of shade between the top and the bottom which adds to the obvious charm of the piece. The repeat floral design is arranged in an open manner combining styled palmettes, leaves and flowering tendrils. There is also the interesting feature of to one-eyed animals at each end of the field. It is a wonderful arrangement and shows the rich imagination of the Bakhtiari weavers. The border also has a unique feel to it with the leaves and palmettes arranged in a very restrained format. This is truly Persian village weaving at its best. As part of our service, we have washed the rug in our workshops. It has a good even pile, some minor loss to the lower outer guard stripe, otherwise it has survived in very good condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
