Description

This antique Fereghan carpet has several outstanding features. The wool quality is excellent with a soft velvety nap. All the dyes are derived from natural sources, and include some wonderful shades of aubergine, green, gold, orange, terracotta and indigo blue. The design is a repeat Herati pattern on a blue field which is framed by an extremely pretty main border. Note the very unusual chevron design outer guard stripe which displays all the dyes that have been used in the carpet. Despite its age, which I would date to the last quarter of the 19th century, it has survived in extremely good condition, in full pile and retains original kilim ends and selvages. This is partly because it appears to have been hung on a wall at least for part of its life. The colours have also retained a freshness which belies the age. Note also the size, which was ideal for Victorian homes, but would also work very well in modern rooms, both in traditional and contemporary settings.
