FAQs

Architectural watercolours gained significant prominence in the 19th century as artists travelled extensively to document historic monuments, gothic cathedrals, and ancient ruins with precise draughtsmanship and atmospheric washes.

Authentic period works were typically executed using gum arabic-based watercolours on hand-made rag paper or watercolour board, often housed behind glass within wooden or gilded frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper fibres under magnification for hand-made characteristics, checking for period-appropriate pigments, inspecting for genuine age-related toning, and often finding artist signatures or date inscriptions in pencil or ink.

Such works can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing them with minimalist frames or traditional moulding, hanging them against dark or neutral walls, and combining them with sophisticated lighting to highlight the intricate brushwork.

To prevent fading and degradation, antique watercolours must be displayed away from direct sunlight, framed using UV-protective conservation glass, and kept in environments with stable relative humidity and temperature.
