FAQs

Architectural watercolours served as vital records of historic buildings, monuments, and ecclesiastical interiors before the widespread adoption of photography, often capturing intricate structural details and atmospheric lighting.

These works typically utilised finely ground pigments suspended in a water-soluble binder, applied to handmade rag paper or card, often accompanied by pen and ink underdrawings.

Authentication relies on examining the paper texture, watermark evidence, oxidisation of pigments, and the presence of hand-applied brushwork rather than modern dot-matrix or offset printing patterns.

Such pieces pair effectively with traditional timber furniture and muted wall colours, often hung in simple frames to highlight the historical subject matter without competing visual clutter.

Preservation requires framing behind UV-protective glazing, mounting with acid-free materials, and hanging away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent paper degradation and fading.
