19th century
Description

Description:

This is a fine quality antique William IV chiffonier constructed from stunning figured mahogany, with two-doors, circa 1835 - 1840, in excellent original condition. Supporting a raised mirror-back with shelf, decorated with a foliate scroll relief carved pediment. The shelf is supported by finely carved corbel supports. The base comprises a recessed long frieze drawer, which is mahogany lined, and a pair of arched pane cupboard doors below. The panels doors are flanked by exquisite pilaster columns. The right-hand door retains the original brass working lever lock and key, along with the original brass door catches on the left-hand door. Inside, there is a central shelf. The William IV chiffonier stands on a lovely protruding breakfront moulded plinth, with the back of the chiffonier retaining its original pine backboards, terminated on the original elegant turned bun feet. It is becoming extremely rare to find such quality of materials and craftsmanship in antique furniture as this piece. This William IV chiffonier would have been commissioned for a wealthy individual or family.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging in the 1830s, William IV chiffoniers bridge Regency elegance and Victorian solidity, typically featuring low cupboard bases, flame mahogany veneers, and decorative carved shelf backings.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using solid oak or pine frameworks faced with rich flame mahogany veneers, featuring hand-dovetailed construction, brass locks, and carved scrollwork details.

Authentic pieces show signs of period craftsmanship, such as hand-cut dovetails, original brass escutcheons, natural timber shrinkage around panels, and age-related wear to original mirrored backings.

A chiffonier serves as a functional focal point in a dining room or hallway, providing concealed storage while the upper shelf offers space for decorative ceramics, lamps, or artwork.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol cleaners or placement near direct heat sources.
