Exceptional Tekke Main Carpet, Central Asia, Circa 1850, 2.54m X 2.06m

Description

The Tekke tribe were one of the largest of the Turkoman tribes that migrated through Central Asia for centuries. They eventually settled in North-East Persia and southern Afghanistan. The Tekke weavers produced some wonderful woven artifacts that belied the harsh conditions under which the they lived and worked. This Main Carpet carpet is a really wonderful example of their work Main carpets were produced to occupy the central area of the Yurt or tent, but rarely have I seen one made to this standard. It has fine silky wool and wonderful dyes. Note the mahogany field colour with a dark blue and a lovely blue-green. The main guls are rounded and well-spaced while the secondary guls are well drawn. Note the one row of gurbaghe guls at the bottom end of the field. The borders are dominated by the classic octagonal motifs, but also have other interesting ornaments especially along the long borders. This tour de force is in almost perfect original condition with only a couple of very small old repairs. Highly recommended to both collectors and decorators.
