Fine French Empire Medusa Head Buckle

Rare, fine quality, early 19th century gilt bronze ormolu French Empire Hussards Officer Medusa headed waist belt buckle. Single circular classical bronze bosette depicting a finely cast and chased screaming Medusa head with wings and snakes, measuring about 41mm in diameter. An identical version can be seen in Michel Petard''s ''Equipements Militaires Tome V de 1804-1815'', p49, fig 457. French First Empire, circa 1810.
