Description

Karaja lies in the Azerbaijan district of North-West Persia where rug weaving has taken place for centuries. The diverse ethnic mix and history of the region is reflected in the variety of rugs and carpets that were produced there, ranging from nomadic or tribal weavings to the sophisticated court and city products of Tabriz, the major city of the region. Although a village rug, this lovely piece resembles the designs used by the Shahsavan tribes who migrated in the region. It is characterised by strong geometric ornaments and bold colouring. The field is composed of a row of three geometrc medallions surrounded by myriad stylised floral and geometric ornaments. Note the lovely yellow border. Thin and finely knotted with hand spun wool and natural dyes which have harmonised beautifully over time. The rug has survived the generations in excellent condition, and has recently been professionally cleaned. The original sides and ends are intact.
