FAQs

Antique watercolour paintings typically feature transparent washes of pigment on handmade or rag paper, focusing on naturalistic lighting, atmospheric effects, and pastoral or architectural subjects.

Traditional works were produced using ground pigments suspended in a water-soluble binder, applied to various forms of fibrous rag paper, often accompanied by graphite underdrawings.

Authenticity is assessed through paper fibre analysis, watermark verification, pigment testing, and examining the ageing patterns of the paper, backing, and framing materials.

Historic artwork adds depth and character to contemporary spaces, often enhanced by minimalist framing and neutral mountboards to allow the historical narrative to stand out against plain walls.

Preservation requires framing with UV-protective conservation glass, maintaining stable humidity levels, and avoiding direct exposure to strong sunlight to prevent fading and paper degradation.
