Persian Gabbeh Rug, Circa 1880, 2.80m X 1.65m

19th century
Description

The term 'gabbeh' refers to a tribal rug made with a thick and loose texture that was usually for bedding or as a blanket in the tribal home. They are often decorated with wonderful archaic ornamentation that reflects the tribal beliefs, traditions and physical environment of the weavers. Myriad wonderful details characterise this charming tribal rug woven by either the Luri or Qashqai tribeswomen of south-west Persia. Handspun wool and truly exquisite dyes, including a wonderful emerald green generously used around the field. The field is dominated by two diamond medallions, but there are so many interesting details including scattered geometric motifs stylised plant forms and animals. Note the cleverly drawn main border and the skirts at each end which are ubiquitous in south-west Persian tribal weaving. One can get a real sense of tribal life through a close study of the ornamentation of this rug. It is also a very nice size, and has survived in good condition despite the harsh conditions in which it was probably used.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
