Description

Woven in the last quarter of the 19th century, this pretty piece was probably made to be used as the front of a decorative storage bag, a mafrash, in the Karabagh district of the Caucasus. The central flowering urn reveals a European influence while the botehs either side are true to the Eastern tradition. It is a charming piece which reveals the complex mix of design influences in the region at the end of the 19th century. Woven on a cotton foundation with a fine wool pile and natural dyes. High quality workmanship. very good condition, clean and with no repairs. This little rug would make a colorful addition to your decorative scheme.
