Rare Antique Kazak Runner

An incredibly rare and long antique Kazak runner, dating from circa 1880 and in breath-taking original condition! It has been privately owned for most of its life, a rare find and one that really is remarkable for us to see.  The condition of high soft highland wool from Kazak is thick and soft, with exquisite natural dyes.  Rare yellow probably saffron dyes, variable green dyes, pale blues and early browns too.  Some tiny losses to the original kilim ends, but in general the runner is in nearly perfect order. Extremely rare to find long Kazak runners, as they were not known for producing pieces like this.  They preferred to weave rug smaller rug sizes, so we would imagine this long runner would have been commissioned for the Western market in the late 19th century.  The flower design in the main ivory border with four plant tendrils, is more often known as the Crab border design, especially when as abstract, it clearly looks more crab like! Bold geometric medallions throughout the main field, are classic motifs from Kazak, well spaced out too.  Clearly woven by an accomplished weaver.

Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.  Generally antique Kazak rugs will be extremely soft to handle as the wool is light and woven on a supple foundation.
