Rare Antique Bakshaish Carpet

An early design antique Bakshaish carpet woven around 1870, a large latch-hook tribal design rarely seen in the main field.  Similar to designs you would more-often associate with rugs and carpets from the Caucasus.  Woven in villages in Azerbaijan, Northern Persia, these weavers would undoubtedly copy motifs and designs they had seen in rugs from the Caucasus too and Caucasian rugs.  An amazing rustic early carpet with natural dyes have mellowed over the last 150 years or more to produce muted yet warm colours.
 
Some old restoration in the main field has been carried out a long time ago.  Often the brown / aubergine dyes corrode due to iron properties in the wool used and are subject to re-wrapping which has been done in places.  Generally the main aspects of the carpet are original and the pile height is low to medium high.
