Charlie Johnson Payne, Snaffles (British, 1884-1967)
‘Impressions of The Past Season’, circa 1907, titled ‘Impressions of The Past Season’ in pencil, pencil, black ink and watercolour, in the original gilt slip mount and oak frame
Dimensions: 36 x 26cm (excluding mount and frame) 42 x 32cm overall x 2.5cm
Provenance: Private Collection, UK.
This is a rare early original watercolour; it has many similarities to the known work ‘The Cavalry Point to Point, Hawthorn Hill ‘07’ painted by Snaffles for Captain Jardine. These works very much display the artist’s early style; he was 23 years old. In the year of 1907, Snaffles painted a number of works for the magazine, The Bystander, including ‘Impressions of the First Cavalry Brigade - Polo at Aldershot’.
