Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this exceptional quality Meiji Period (1868-1912) cast bronze okimono of a writhing Dragon clutching a rock crystal pearl within his claws, another large and totally original rock crystal sphere rests upon his back, the bronze is heavily cast and finished in exquisite detail, the dragons eyes rendered in gilt and shakudo detail for menacing effect, the underside is finely detailed and carries a shaped silver tablet artist signed Sanmi Zo ,which also translates to read Kazumi , a fabulous okimono ideal for a shelf or will display to great effect on your side table or desk space, a rare and imposing creature ever popular with Asian art buyers .

It is worth mentioning that the larger sphere is an original almost clear rock crystal ball and not a glass copy, it was not machine made and as such is not 100% circular, giving it a unique charm as an object in its own right, rock crystal spheres are highly revered in Asia and can sometimes be found on their own stands often rising from cast bronze crashing waves.

Kazumi the alternate name of Gyokuryuken Sanmi was a well recorded Meiji period artist making all manner of okimono in silver and bronze, whilst seemingly specializing in Dragons. One particular Silver Dragon okimono by Kazumi realised an eye watering $128,000 in Bonhams New York sale of March 2013.

In 2020 vision of an enlightened ruler plate 20 we featured a pair of silver entwined dragons by the artist Kazumi also known as Gyokuryuken Sanmi , these have now found their way into a USA collection, we also featured a a cast silver incense burner of a Shi Shi Dog - plate 26.
