Fine Bronze Bust of Menelaus by Servant

Description

Fine quality, late 19th Century Grand Tour patinated bronze library bust on a gilt bronze socle of the Mycenaean Spartan King Menelaus, husband of Helen of Troy and a central figure in the Trojan Wars. After the antique marble original in the Vatican Museum in Rome which is sometimes referenced as a bust of Ajax. Signed GS to the back with a central bee motif for Georges Emile Henri Servant (1828-1890) a French horologer who in 1855 took control of his father's foundry in Paris. He became known for high quality Greek and Egyptian style clocks and bronzes. He exhibited at many international exhibitions and was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1867. He was awarded France's highest honour, the Legion d'Honneur in 1874. France, circa 1875.
