French Surrealist, 1948, the Dream....hurts , Fantastical Animal Oil on Canvas International Surrealist Exhibition

1920 - 1940
Description

A truly exceptional early surrealist oil on canvas by Roger BRIELLE (1899-1960), dating from 1948.

Roger Brielle, painter, poet and art critic, was a friend of Max Jacob and Paul Elouard. It is André Breton who invites him to participate in the International Surrealist exhibition of 1947 at the Galerie Maeght (with Marcel Duchamp et al). What is particularly exciting is that our painting, created the following year, dates from this very period.

Roger Brielle subsequently exhibited with the surrealist group in Paris, Prague, Brussels and Rio. Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge has a sketch by the artst in the permanent collection.

The painting presented here has wonderful provenance: it belonged to the art historian, expert and collector Roger Passeron.

Passeron had a special interest in Roger Brielle and organised a retrospective exhibition of Brielle's work at the Chateau de Blois in 1961. Our painting featured in this exhibition, and is referenced in the Passeron archives as no. RP397.

Signed and dated at the lower right, our oil on canvas measures 60 x 51 cm. On the verso, the painting is signed again and indistinctly titled "Le Reve...Nuit", which is likely a play on words, translatable as "The Dream...Night" and also as "The Dream...hurts"

Dating from the immediate post war period, a time of poverty, the work of art has visible "battle scars", with craquelure notably in the left part of the painting. While it does not lokk "like new", the surface has been consolidated, tension bands were added and antifungal treatment was applied, so that the painting can now be proudly displayed.

It presented in a gorgeous more recent frame by Parisian master frame makers Delf. The overall framed size is 71.5 x 83 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century French Surrealism evolved from the 1920s avant-garde movement, combining dreamlike imagery, symbolism, and psychological themes with expressive painterly techniques.

Artists primarily used oil paints on stretched linen or cotton canvas, often built up with layered glazes or textured impasto on gessoed grounds.

Authentication involves examining natural canvas ageing, frame construction, period-appropriate artist signatures, and documentation from contemporary gallery exhibitions.

Position the artwork on a focal wall, framed by dedicated accent lighting, or paired with minimalist contemporary furniture to accentuate its dark tones and composition.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations, and remove gentle surface dust using a dry soft brush rather than liquid cleaning solutions.
