Charming Persian Baktiar Carpet, Circa 1890, 3.14m X 2.23m

19th century
Description

The Baktiari are an ancient nomadic people who migrated in the Zagros Mountains of southern Persia. When they finally began to settle in villages from the end of the 19th century, they wove decorative carpets known for their daring colouring and variety of designs, but which are so often underrated. This is a perfect example. Hand spun wool and wonderful natural dyes, in particular the terracotta, green, yellow and blue which have mellowed over time and created beautiful gentle abrashes. The medallion design restrained and elegant, while the floral details around it are drawn in a very naïve and charming way. The field design is complemented by a charming ivory border. Overall this is a very charismatic carpet which would adorn many different settings. The size is also very useful, small room-size which is so difficult to find. Well looked after through the generations, it has survived in good pile, with ends and sides intact. A recently professionally cleaning brought out the wonderful depth of colour in the natural dyes. We feel this is an exceptional buy.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
