This Japanese Edo or Meiji sword fitting is a heavy bronze tsuba with a dark bronze finish, dating from 1900. The rectangular piece with curved corners and shaped edges is decorated with a silver overlay featuring a heron standing on one leg amongst water reeds and a stream against a textured background. The surface shows distinct metallic tones, finely incised feather details, and two central apertures for a samurai sword mount. It measures 8 cm high and 7 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this object sits suitably on a bookshelf within a gentleman's library study setting. It provides a tactile display piece for a collection of Japanese metalwork or antique sword fittings, resting upright or flat amongst books and decorative objects.

FAQs

A tsuba is a removable handguard fitted between the blade and handle of traditional Japanese swords, such as the katana and wakizashi. It serves a functional purpose by balancing the weapon and preventing the users hand from sliding onto the blade, whilst also functioning as a decorative status symbol.
