Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tsuba is a removable handguard fitted between the blade and handle of traditional Japanese swords, such as the katana and wakizashi. It serves a functional purpose by balancing the weapon and preventing the users hand from sliding onto the blade, whilst also functioning as a decorative status symbol.

Tsuba were predominantly forged from iron, copper, or bronze, and decorated using sophisticated metalworking techniques including chiselling, relief carving, and patination. Artisans frequently added detailed overlays and inlays using precious metals such as silver and gold.

Authentic pieces display evidence of genuine hand-carving, period-appropriate patination, and proportional openings for the blade tang (nakago-ana) and secondary tools. Many authentic items also bear chiselled signatures (mei) from known artisan schools along the central plate.

A tsuba is best displayed mounted on a bespoke acrylic or hardwood stand placed inside a glass vitrine, on a shelf, or framed within a padded shadow box mounted on a focal wall. This presentation highlights its sculptural form and protects the delicate metalwork from dust.

Maintain the item by dusting gently with a soft dry brush and handling only while wearing clean cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils from skin. Do not use commercial metal polishes, chemical cleaners, or water, as these destroy historical patination and surface details.
