Flowers: Vibrant, Sunny Floral Still Life Antique Oil on Canvas by French Italian Bertoldo Taubert

1940 - 1960
Description

Who could not be cheered by this vibrant, sunny and fresh floral still life by Bertoldo "Berto" Taubert (1915-1974)!

The son of a painter who was the portraitist of Victor-Emmanuel III and Pope Pius XI, Bertoldo was born in Italy, but moved to Paris as a child with his family. Eventually, he would take French citizenship.

Taubert's works have been described as modern and personal. In his youth, the artist spent a great deal of time painting in East Asia, South America and Scandinavia, inspired in turn by each of these locales.

During World War II, Taubert became an active member of the resistance, helping over 300 people escape from occupied France. Captured by the Gestapo in 1944, he remained a prisoner until the end of the war.

After the war, Taubert resumed his work, notably painting a portrait of Churchill. An internationally recognised artist, Taubert's paintings are in the collections of the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris as well as in museums in Strasbourg, Milan, and Buenos Aires.

The work presented here dates from 1950s. An oil on canvas measuring 35 x 27 cm, the painting is signed at the lower right and presented in a museum quality frame. The overall framed size is 57 x 49 cm. Cost of shipping for UK and Continental Europe: £25

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century floral still life paintings frequently feature expressive impasto brushwork, saturated colour palettes, and structured compositions. Artists during this period blended classical botanical subjects with post-impressionist textures and modern colour relationships.

These artworks were typically created using oil pigments applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were often constructed from carved wood or cast moulded plaster with gilded finishes and cloth-lined inner slips.

Authentic oil paintings display distinct tactile brushstrokes, layered impasto paint application, and natural surface age over time. Inspecting the reverse side for stretcher marks, artist signatures, and gradual darkening of canvas fibres helps verify authenticity.

A framed floral still life operates well as a focal point above a console table, mantelpiece, or within a gallery wall arrangement. Pairing traditional gilded framing with contemporary streamlined furniture creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Position the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Lightly dust the surface using a soft, dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or abrasive cloths.
