Description

Dating to the mid-19th century, this rare Persian textile depicts scenes from the famous story of Shirin and Khosrow, a tragic romance by the 12th century poet Nizami Ganjavi. The delicate palette and pretty scenes are engaging and very decorative. Note the dimensions which would make this a wonderful addition to a decorative scheme adding exotic character. Lined and professionally cleaned. Minor areas of loss to the field, but generally in very good condition.

Qajar textiles originate from Persia during the Qajar Dynasty (17891925) and are commonly produced using the kalamkari technique. This craft combines hand-carved wooden block printing with detailed hand-painted touches on woven cotton cloth to create complex architectural, botanical, and figural compositions.

These textiles were crafted on hand-spun woven cotton grounds using natural pigments derived from plants, minerals, and insects. Common ingredients included madder root for reds, indigo for blues, and pomegranate rind for yellows and greens, applied via mordant-dyed block printing.
