Description

A carved grey limestone full length sculpture of a standing Buddha. Sui dynasty 581-618. The head with typical long earlobes, a small mouth with serene expression. The long loosely draped robes falling into pleats showing definition of the legs underneath. The right hand of the statue is depicted raised at chest height, with palm facing forwards, abhaya mudra, is a symbol of fearlessness and protection from fear. The left arm hanging down and loosely angled at the elbow with the fingers bent and pointing upwards, varada mudra, symbolise giving and compassion. This beautiful, small carved stone Buddha has damage as can clearly be seen, but is finely carved and more importantly has survived.
