This Taisho period Japanese bronze incense burner dates from around 1920 and takes the form of an unusual crescent moon silhouette in warm brown metal. The piece stands on small figural supports depicting figures holding up the body, and includes a circular removable metal grate inside the lower section. The smooth cast metal surface shows a rich aged patina with minor wear and rubbing consistent with age and use. Measuring 25 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, the burner sits well on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or living room to hold aromatic incense for daily use or display as a decorative sculptural object.

FAQs

In Japanese culture, incense burners, known as koro, have been used for centuries in religious ceremonies, tea rituals, and domestic settings to burn fragrant woods and incense.

These objects are typically lost-wax cast from bronze or brass, featuring detailed hand-finishing, engraving, and patination achieved through controlled oxidation.

Authentic pieces from the early 20th century exhibit hand-cast construction details, natural wear to the base, proper weight consistent with solid metal, and period-appropriate motifs.

Position the piece on a sideboard, bookshelf, or mantelpiece where its distinct silhouette can be highlighted against a neutral background.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that can strip the original patination or surface wax.
